Yesterday, I was fortunate to cover the Early Bird Invite hosted by the TRACK at New Balance. The sights and sounds of this indoor track meet were amazing!
The following is a summary of the sprint events (tomorrow I will upload pics and clips from the middle distance events.)
In the women's 60 meter final, Ryan Jennings outleaned Odette van Wyk in a time of 7.57, with Jayani Santos (University of Lowell) following closely behind in third place. Later in the meet, Ryan and Jayani ran closely again in the 200 meter race with Ryan edging out Jayani for the win.
Cole Martin, University of Maine, won the men's 60 meters in an outstanding time of 6.90. Ara Kaya from UMass Lowell sprinted to second place in a time of 6.97, besting Joel Spaulding from Assumption.
In the men's 200 meter race, the race was staged in multiple heats with the top time coming from separate heats. Josh Sewell of the University of Maine dipped under twenty two seconds, posting the fastest time of the day with 21.93 seconds. Truman Williams of Bates ran 22.01 in the 10th heat. Gordon College's Daniel Chewning set a school record, finishing in 22.08 for third place. Fast times so early in the season!
The formula for 400 meters indoors - get out fast and hang on!
The teammates from the University of Maine posted the top three fastest times of the day in the women's 400. Kelcie Horst dipped below fifty nine seconds with the fastest time of the day, 58.70. She ran a fairly even race with a 27 for the first 200m, followed by a 31.7 for the second 200. Catherine Primavera ran the second fastest time in 59.97 with Maddie Cur running just behind in 1:00.82. Those practices in Maine must be something else!
In the 400 meters men's race, Andrew Card, of the University of Maine ran a very fast early season time of 48.08. Bates College's Truman Willams ran 48.53 to place second in the event, Conner Michaud from the University of Maine posting the third fastest time of the day, 48.75
